William Keeney Bixby was born in Adrian, Michigan, in 1857. His career in the railroad industry began with a job as baggageman and concluded with his position as president and chairman of the board of the American Car and Foundry Co. Elmer Adler worked in his family's clothing firm in Rochester, N.Y. while developing an avocation as a book and print collector.
